LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In the first two games of the weekend, the Kalamazoo College baseball pitching staff was the main story holding its opponent to three of fewer runs in each of the first two games, but the Hornets' offense decided to join the party Sunday afternoon.

Erupting for seven runs in the top of the fifth inning powered by a three-run shot to left center from Mitch VanKoevering, Kalamazoo capped off a perfect opening weekend defeating Spalding 15-6 at Derby City Field in Louisville, Ky.

The Hornets found themselves in a 4-1 hole after the third inning but climbed to within in one in the top of the fourth when VanKoevering drove in two of his five runs on a double to left center.

After tacking on the seven runs in the top of the fifth, the Hornets' bullpen limited Spalding to just two runs in their final five frames and allowed K to coast to the win after tacking on four more runs in the final inning.

Four different Hornets recorded three hits on the afternoon including Ryan Orr, Ian Kobernick, Jack Clark and David Kracht.

VanKoevering's five RBI give him a team-high seven on the season. Clark also drove in three runs in the day's second game.

Improving to a perfect 3-0, Kalamazoo will head home to prep for its six-game spring training trip beginning on March 16 in Tucson, Ariz.
