Baseball sweeps MIAA opener at Albion

ALBION, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team scored five runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Albion 5-3 in the conference opener for both teams Monday.

After being held scoreless through six innings and trailing 2-0 in the top of the seventh, Kalamazoo was down to its final out with two runners on base following Andre Gard's double and a walk by David Kracht. Jordan Wiley drove in the Hornets' first run with a single. Ian Kobernick was then hit by a pitch which prompted a pitching change by the Britons. A wild pitch led to Kalamazoo's second run which tied the game. Jack Clark then drove home a pair of runs with a double before Mitch VanKoevering drove home Clark with a single making it 5-2 Kalamazoo.

Albion scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and had a runner on base when Ryan Orr struck out the final batter to earn the win.

Wiley, VanKoevering and Connor Grant each finished with two hits. Kobernick, Clark, VanKoevering, Grant and Gard each had a double.

Orr improved to 2-0 on the season with the win while striking out five and walking one.

Game Two

Kalamazoo pounded out 18 hits and scored in seven of the nine innings en route to a 15-4 win to sweep the doubleheader. Kalamazoo scored three runs in each of the first, third, fifth and sixth innings.

Ryan Orr was 3-for-4 with three RBIs while playing second base after pitching the first game.

Jack Clark was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs while Connor Grant was 3-for-5 with an RBI. 

Ian Kobernick had two hits, including a double with three RBIs. Jordan Wiley and Alex Fultz also doubled in the game.

Aaron Schwark earned the win on the mound allowing just one earned run in six innings while striking out eight.

The two teams are scheduled to wrap up the series with a doubleheader in Kalamazoo on Tuesday, March 28 beginning at 2 p.m.
