Baseball splits opening doubleheader at Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team split its opening MIAA doubleheader at Trine on Thursday. Kalamazoo won the opener 8-6 before dropping the second game 3-2 in 10 innings.

Game One

Kalamazoo hit two home runs in the top of the seventh to come-from-behind and win the conference opener 8-6.

The Hornets scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, but Trine evened the score in the bottom of the second. Connor Grant homered in the top of the third, but Trine scored again in the bottom half to tie the score.

The host Thunder put three runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. Kalamazoo chipped away with a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to trail 6-5 heading into the final frame. Stefan Leclerc led off the seventh with a home run to tie the game. Grant followed with a double, and with two outs Andre Gard hit a two-run home run to put the Hornets on top 8-6. Trine reached on a walk in the bottom of the inning, but a fly out to right ended the game for the Hornets.

Connor Grant finished 3-for-4 with a double, home run and a pair of RBIs. Chase Coselman and Alex Fultz each had two hits including a double for Fultz.

Joe Giacalone picked up the win in relief while Andre Gard pitched the seventh and earned the save minutes after hitting the home run to put the Hornets on top offensively.

Game Two

Trine won the second game 3-2 in 10 innings. The host Thunder singled home the winning run with the bases loaded and two outs.

Kalamazoo led 1-0 after the second inning, but trailed 2-1 after five. The Hornets evened the score in the seventh.

Kalamazoo was limited to six hits in the game, but four of the hits were doubles by Stefan Leclerc, Chase Coselman, Josh Reuter and Alex Fultz.

Fultz went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The two teams resume action Friday with a doubleheader in Kalamazoo scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
