Baseball Splits with Olivet

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College baseball team wrapped up its 2019 season with a Sunday split against Olivet. The Comets took the first game 6-4 before the Hornets bounced back with an 11-4 win in game two.

Game 1

Following Olivet's opening inning run, the Hornets tied the game in the bottom of the second with a run of their own. Kalamazoo used runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-1 lead. 

After tying the game in the top of the sixth, Olivet took a one run lead into the bottom of the seventh. The Hornets forced extra innings in the bottom of the seventh on Austin Duff's single that scored pinch runner Blake Bean. Bean was running following Alex Fultz's double to deep right field. 

The Comets picked up two more runs in the top of the eighth and Kalamazoo was unable to complete a come back. 

Senior Stefan Leclerc led the Hornets by reaching base in all four of his at-bats. Leclerc had three hits and one walk while scoring two runs. 

Alex Fultz and Jordan Wiley each collected two hits. Wiley drove in a run in the game. 

Jacob Gilhaus started on the mound for Kalamazoo and went five innings while surrendering three runs on five hits. 

Game 2

The Hornets bounced back early in game two with one run in the first inning and four more in the second to take an early 5-0 lead. After two Olivet runs in the top of the fourth, Kalamazoo responded with four of its own to extend the lead to 9-2.

Olivet brought another run across the plate in the in the sixth before Leclerc continued his big day with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning. The Hornets allowed one more in the final frame to take an 11-4 win in their final game. 

Leclerc led Kalamazoo with two hits including the home run and a triple. The senior drove in four runs while scoring two more. 

Chase Coselman added two hits, three RBIs and two runs. 

Drew Novetsky also had two hits and drove in one base runner. 

Max Novick collected his first win of the season while going five innings and allowing two runs while striking out seven. 

Leclerc finished the game on the mound for Kalamazoo and struck out the lone batter he faced in his first collegiate pitching appearance.
