Football overcomes halftime deficit to win 17-13 at Alma

The Kalamazoo College football team overcame a 10-3 halftime deficit to win 17-13 at Alma in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association competition on Saturday.

Alma led 7-0 after the first quarter and 10-0 with 4:41 left in the second quarter.

William Marx's 30-yard field goal with 1:54 remaining until halftime cut Kalamazoo's deficit to seven points shortly before halftime.

Kalamazoo evened the score at 10-10 when Dan Grost broke loose for a 41-yard touchdown run on the Hornets' first possession of the second half.

Alma fumbled the ball on the first play of their next drive and Kalamazoo's Alan Mencer scooped up the ball and ran 15 yards for a touchdown to put the Hornets up 17-10. It was Mencer's second fumble recovery return for a touchdown this season.

The Scots kicked a field goal with 8:59 left in the third quarter to make it 17-13 in Kalamazoo's favor.

Kalamazoo drove to the Alma seven yardline late in the third quarter, but an interception ended that scoring threat. Alma twice made it inside the Kalamazoo 30 yardline, but was unable to put any additional points on the board.

Kalamazoo had 289 yards of total offense compared to 283 for Alma. Each team threw one interception, but the Scots fumble that was returned for a touchdown proved to be the difference in the outcome. Alma also was penalized 11 times for 105 yards while Kalamazoo had just four penalties for 36 yards.

Dimeko Price rushed for 99 yards on 19 carries. He also had a 42-yard reception. Dan Grost rushed for 47 yards on four carries, including the 41-yard touchdown run.

Aaron McGuire was 6-of-7 passing for 53 yards before being relieved by Justin Danzy in the second quarter. Danzy finished 9-of-12 for 90 yards.

Jimmy Frye led the receivers with four catches for 24 yards. Colin Leffert had two catches for 21 yards.

Brett Thomas and Dylan Zerki each had six tackles to lead the Kalamazoo defense. Thomas had 2.5 tackles for loss while Zerki and Ian Good were both in on a quarterback sack. Brandon Casto had five tackles with an interception.

Kalamazoo returns home to face Olivet in the season finale at Angell Field next Saturday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.
