Football comes up just short at Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College football team came up just short in a 27-25 loss at Trine in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play on Saturday.

Trine opened the scoring early only to have Kalamazoo even the score at 6-6 minutes later when K.J. Schultz caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Alex White. The extra point attempts by both teams failed, and the teams failed to convert extra point attempts on four of the combined eight touchdowns in the game.

Trine regained the lead late in first quarter (13-6), but the Hornets scored again early in the second quarter on a 1-yard run by Clay Wilkey to make it 13-12. The host Thunder made it 20-12 with another score just 38 seconds before halftime.

Trine expanded its lead to 27-12 with 2:59 left in the third quarter before Kalamazoo's Elijah Hamilton-Wray scored on a 23-yard run as time expired in the quarter (27-18).

With 9:07 left in the fourth quarter, Kalamazoo blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown making it a 27-25 game. Unfortunately for the Hornets, they were unable to gain a lead as their final three possessions resulted in a punt, lost fumble, and loss on downs with 1:54 remaining.

Alex White was 11-of-21 passing for 154 yards with a touchdown and interception while sitting out part of the game with an injury. Brock Rucinski was 6-of-17 in relief for 45 yards.

Elijah Hamilton-Wray rushed for 100 yards on 19 carries with the touchdown. White added 22 yards on seven carries.

K.J. Schultz led the Kalamazoo receivers with 87 yards on five catches and a touchdown. Keigan Ryckman had 46 yards on three catches while Hamilton-Wray added 26 yards on three catches.

Jakob Frederick was credited with 16 total tackles to lead the Hornet defense. Josh Vance made 10 tackles and was credited with a forced fumble. Octavius Sanders had an interception while Joe Piet and Dylan Calloway were each credited with a sack.

Kalamazoo returns to action next Saturday, Nov. 7 at Adrian before hosting Hope in the season finale on Saturday, Nov. 14.
