Football drops home opener to No. 5 Wheaton

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College football team lost its home opener 58-6 to No. 5 Wheaton (Ill.) College Saturday at Angell Field.

The visiting Thunder wasted no time as they returned the opening kick 88 yards for a touchdown. 

Wheaton led 28-0 after the first quarter and well into the second quarter before Kalamazoo's Seth Dexter caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Zach VanFaussien. Wheaton added a touchdown with 22 seconds left in the half to take a 35-6 lead into the break.

Lorenzo Redmond rushed for 54 yards on 10 carries to lead the Hornets. Cam Crothers added 24 yards on two carries while CJ Foster had four carries for 14 yards.

Zach VanFaussien finished 9-for-15 passing for 55 yards. Alex White was 3-of-10 for 42 yards.

Anthony Giovanni led the receivers with four catches for 53 yards. Dexter finished with 27 yards on three receptions.

Quentin Sweeney led the Kalamazoo defense with eight total tackles. Jacob Chantres and Jakob Frederick each finished with seven while Jake Osen and Alex Stockwell had six apiece. Clay Wilkey and Tom Beaubien each recorded a sack.

Kalamazoo returns to action at home next Saturday, Sept. 16 with a 2 p.m. start against Concordia (Ill.).
