Football Wins 23-7 at Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Kalamazoo College football team improved to 3-0 with a 23-7 win at Rockford College Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first quarter, Greg Kearns kicked his first of three field goals four seconds into the second quarter.

Kalamazoo went up 10-0 four minutes later when Jared Pittman scored on a 9-yard run to cap a 65-yard drive.

Zach VanFaussien connected with Sam Matthews on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 43 seconds left in the quarter to put the Hornets up 17-0 heading into halftime.

Kearns kicked his second field goal with 35 seconds left in the third to give the Hornets a 20-0 lead. He kicked his third field goal with 10:28 left in the fourth to make it a 23-0 game.

Rockford avoided the shutout with a touchdown with 1:59 left in the game.

Kalamazoo put up 431 yards of total offense while limiting Rockford to just 159 yards. The Hornets rushed for 258 yards, the ninth-highest game total in school history.

Zach VanFaussien was 16-of-31 passing for 173 yards. The quarterback also rushed for 97 yards on 13 carries.

CJ Foster ran for 86 yards on 15 carries while Jared Pittman had 74 yards on 12 carries with a touchdown.

Dylan Padget led the receivers with three catches for 54 yards. Sam Matthews had 38 yards on three catches including the touchdown.

In addition to limiting Rockford to just 159 total yards, the Hornet defense allowed only 11 first downs in the game.

Jakob Frederick led the Kalamazoo defense with 12 total tackles. Joe Piet was in on 11 tackles including 2.5 sacks. Alex Stockwell was credited with 1.5 sacks.

Kalamazoo (3-0) has a bye next week before opening MIAA play at home on Sept. 29 against Adrian at 1 p.m.
