Football Improves to 5-0

FINLANDIA, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College football team remained undefeated with a 56-7 win at Finlandia University on Saturday.

Kalamazoo improved to 5-0 with the win, the team's best start since 1978. The Hornets also remain tied for first place in the MIAA with a 2-0 start.

Kalamazoo scored first on a safety as Finlandia snapped the ball over its punter's head and out of the end zone. Kalamazoo added a field goal midway through the first quarter and a touchdown with 3:53 remaining to take a 12-0 lead after the first quarter.

Another Hornet field goal early in the second made it 15-0, but Finlandia made it 15-7 with a touchdown at the 10:44 mark. Kalamazoo scored two touchdowns in the final eight minutes to take a 29-7 lead into halftime.

Kalamazoo scored three touchdowns in the third and another in the fourth leading to the 56-7 final.

The Hornets had 31 first downs in the game while limiting Finlandia to eight. The Hornets also put up 503 yards of total offense compared to 107 for the Lions.

Zach VanFaussien was 21-of-32 passing for 220 yards with three touchdowns. The quarterback also rushed for 65 yards and a score.

Jared Pittman ran for 141 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown.

Dylan Padget led the Hornet receivers with 54 yards on six catches. Sam Matthews, Pierce Burke, Anthony Giovanni and CJ Foster each had a touchdown reception.

Greg Kearns connected on two field goals to go with five extra points.

Taylor Jackson led the Kalamazoo defense with eight total tackles including three sacks. Jakob Frederick was credited with six tackles.

Jacob Chantres, Caleb Edwards, Alex Stockwell and Isaiah Fleming were each credited with a sack. Nick Lang was credited with a blocked punt and 10-yard return for a touchdown.

Kalamazoo (5-0, 2-0) returns to action next at Albion next Saturday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.
