Football Lands Four on All-MIAA Teams

Coplan, Frederick, Osen, and Piet playing football.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College football team ended the season by placing four players on the All-MIAA Defensive Teams. Noah Coplan and Jakob Frederick were both honored to the First Team, while Jake Osen and Joe Piet were both placed on the Second Team.

Noah Coplan, a sophomore defensive lineman from River Forest, Ill. (Oak Park & River Forest HS), was a force up front for the Hornets this year. Coplan finished the season with 29 total tackles up front and four sacks totaling a loss of 22 yards. His presence was known right away this season as he was in on nine tackles and two sacks in just the first two games of the season. This marks the first time Coplan has been honored with All-MIAA recognition.

Linebacker Jakob Frederick was also named to the All-MIAA First Team for the second straight season. The senior from Spring Lake, Mich. (Spring Lake HS) led the Hornets in tackles for the third season in a row. His 87 tackles (8.7 per game) were good for third in the MIAA. Along with his high tackle count, Frederick was also third on the team in tackles for loss (8.5) and added two sacks. Frederick has been a constant force for the Kalamazoo defense in each of his four seasons and has been a starter for three of them.

Sophomore Jake Osen landed on the All-MIAA Second Team for his efforts this season. The defensive back from Livonia, Mich. (Churchill HS) led the Hornets in interceptions (2) and pass breakups (10). His 10 breakups were good for second in the MIAA. Osen finished the year tied for second on the team in tackles with 60 and also picked up a sack from his defensive back position. After playing in nine games as a freshman and recording 24 tackles, Osen took his game to a new level in 2018 and was seen as a leader of the Kalamazoo defense.

Joe Piet was the final member of the All-MIAA Teams for Kalamazoo. Piet, a senior defensive lineman from Evergreen Park, Ill. (Evergreen Park HS), led the Hornets in sacks this season with five. Of his 40 total tackles on the season, 10 were for a loss of 43 total yards which also led the team. His sack and tackle for loss totals were each good for fifth in the MIAA. This award marks the first time Piet has been honored as an All-MIAA performer.
