Football Comes Up Short Against Alfred

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College football team came up a little short in a 10-7 loss to Alfred University at Angell Field on Saturday.

Alfred got on the scoreboard first with a field goal early in the second quarter. Kalamazoo took a 7-3 lead into halftime following a 9-yard touchdown pass from Blaze Lauer to Noah Piercy (Madison Barch extra point). 

After a scoreless third quarter, Alfred pulled ahead 10-7 on a touchdown run with 5:06 remaining in the fourth. Kalamazoo drove to the Alfred 31, but a 48-yard field goal attempt to tie the game came up short with 59 seconds remaining, and the visiting Saxons ran out the clock to end the game.

Josh Nichols threw for 90 yards while Blaze Lauer passed for 39.

Noah Piercy had three catches for 37 yards. Pierce Burke had three catches for 32 yards while Andrew Widger finished with four catches for 27 yards.

Jon Brunette led the rushing game with 41 yards on 19 carries.

Ian Burr averaged 43.8 yards on six punts, including a long of 68 yards and three inside the 20.

Nick Lang led the Hornet defense with eight total tackles. Jamison Brown, Jr. had six while Micah Groom and Carson Deines each had five.

Kalamazoo opens MIAA play at Hope next Saturday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
