Football Drops Homecoming Game to Olivet

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Kalamazoo College's Homecoming football game was spoiled by The University of Olivet 42-14 Saturday afternoon at Angell Field.

After an interception on Kalamazoo's first drive, Olivet scored on its second play from scrimmage, a 56-yard run to the end zone.

Kalamazoo responded with an 8-play, 73-yard drive ending with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Josh Nichols to Jonah Spates, evening the score up at 7-7.

Olivet scored again with 1:13 left in the first to go up 14-7. Olivet scored the only two touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 35-7 lead into halftime.

The Comets scored once in the third and again early in the fourth to go up 42-7. The Hornets made it 42-14 when Nichols connected with Tyler Houle on a 45-yard touchdown pass with 9:35 left in the fourth.

Olivet put up 543 yards of offense, while Kalamazoo had 489 yards. Olivet converted 7-of-12 third downs compared to 4-of-13 by Kalamazoo. 

Josh Nichols was 30-of-52 passing for 344 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Jonah Spates led all receivers with 126 yards on six catches and a score. Tyler Houle had 84 yards on six catches and a score. Lucas Hanifan had four catches for 34 yards.

Jon Brunette rushed for 54 yards on 10 carries. Conner Bell had 43 yards on eight carries.

Corey Garrison led the Hornet defense with 10 total tackles. Tommy Kartes, Gabe Meyers and Adam Stapleton each had seven tackles. Ben Maurice had Kalamazoo's only interception.

Kalamazoo is home again next Saturday, Oct. 14, when the Hornets host Adrian College at 1 p.m.
