Football Wins 33-23 at Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Kalamazoo College football team improved to 5-4 on the season with a 33-23 win over Greenville University in non-conference play Friday night.

Kalamazoo scored on its first possession of the game, capping off a 71-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run by Jon Brunette

Greenville responded with a touchdown and failed extra point to make it 7-6, a score that would stand through the first quarter.

Greenville pulled ahead with a touchdwon early in the second quarter. Kalamazoo regained the lead with 59 seconds left when Lucas Hanifan scored on a 27-yard pass from Josh Nichols. A Greenville field goal as time expired gave the host Panthers a 16-14 lead at halftime.

Kalamazoo went up 21-16 on Nate Clark's 21-yard touchdown reception with 3:53 left in the third. The Hornets then blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown to go up 27-16.

Ian Burr's field goal with 12:45 left in the fourth gave Kalamazo a 30-16 lead. Greenville scored with 9:52 remaining to make it a 7-point game (30-23). Burr's second field goal of the game came with 51 seconds left to give the Hornets a 10-point advantage (33-23).

Josh Nichols was 25-of-38 passing for 343 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Lucas Hanifan had five catches for 151 yards with a score. Jonah Spates had nine catches for 114 yards. Nate Clark finished with two catches for 28 yards and a score.

Jon Brunette carried the ball 10 times for 42 yards and a touchdown.

Adam Stapleton led the Hornet defense with 10 total tackles, including two for loss. Gabe Meyers had eight tackles with a forced fumble and a tackle for loss. Carson Deines had eight tackles with two for loss.

Corey Garrison and Jaylen Bowles-Swain each had an interception. Sam Hughes was credited with the blocked punt, while Aaron Zekman was credited with the touchdown recovery in the end zone.

Kalamazoo closes out the 2023 season at Trine next Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m.
