The Kalamazoo College football team had two student-athletes collect All-MIAA honors on Tuesday (Nov. 14). Ian Burr appeared on the first team as the kicker and then the second team as the punter, while Tommy Kartes was also on the second team.
Kalamazoo finished the 2023 regular season with a 5-5 (1-5 MIAA), picking up its first MIAA win since 2019 after defeating Adrian 45-23. The Hornets were a perfect 4-0 in non-conference play with wins over Oberlin, Kenyon, Defiance, and Greenville.
After being named the MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week three times this season, Burr made his way onto the All-MIAA teams for the first time in his career. The senior made the most field goals among MIAA kickers after going 9/12 (75%) with a long of 46 yards, also tied for the longest among MIAA kickers. He was also 3/3 in extra-point opportunities and had 30 points on the season. Burr also handled most kickoff duties, averaging 57.7 yards per kick and collecting 21 touchbacks on 53 opportunities. In the punting game, Burr had the second-most punting yards in the MIAA with 1,701. Of the 47 punts, 11 were downed inside the 20-yard line, another 10 were fair caught, and only two went into the endzone for touchbacks.
Kartes was the second-leading tackler on the team in eight games, totaling 70 tackles, with 35 being solo. From his defensive back position, the junior had two and a half tackles for loss and a sack to go along with his team-high and third in the MIAA 8.8 tackles per game. Kartes was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week once and collected a career-high 15 tackles in two games this season. He also forced a team and conference-high four fumbles with two recoveries.
