The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team won its second straight game, defeating host Oberlin College 55-53 on Wednesday.
Oberlin led the first 11 minutes of the game, but three lead changes later Kalamazoo took a 29-23 lead into halftime.
The Hornets never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 12 points (41-29) with 14:49 left to play.
Oberlin outscored Kalamazoo 21-9 over the next 10 minutes, however, to tie the game at 50-50 with 3:22 left. The score was tied again (52-52) with 59 seconds remaining, but a layup by Aaron Schoenfeldt and a free throw by Cam Schwartz sealed the 55-53 win for the Hornets.
Kalamazoo shot just 32.8 percent overall compared to 41.3 percent for Oberlin, but the Hornets took 18 more shots largely in part to 23 Oberlin turnovers. The Hornets scored 21 points off turnovers compared to eight by Oberlin (Kalamazoo had just 13 turnovers). The Yeomen held a 44-40 advantage in rebounds, but Kalamazoo held a 15-11 edge in offensive rebounds resulting in 15 second chance points.
Mark Ghafari led Kalamazoo with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting with seven rebounds. Eric Fishman added 10 points with four rebounds.
Adam Peters, Aaron Schoenfeldt, and Cam Schwartz each scored seven points.
Kalamazoo (2-1) returns to Kalamazoo for its home opener against Chicago on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 3 p.m.
