Case Western uses strong second half to defeat Kalamazoo, 82-53

The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team lost 82-53 to Case Western Reserve University at home on Sunday.

Case scored the opening basket and led the rest of the game. The Spartans led by as many as 11 points (22-11) with 5:25 left in the first half, but the Hornets used a 12-2 run to make it a one point game (24-23) just three minutes later. Kalamazoo trailed by two (28-26) at halftime.

Case shot 53 percent in the second half and extended the lead back to double digits (46-36) with 13:39 remaining and secured the win by also making 13-of-14 free throws in the second half.

Case shot 44.8 percent overall while hitting 11-of-27 three pointers (40.7%). Kalamazoo shot 34.6 percent overall while making just 3-of-12 three pointers. Case was 19-of-21 at the free throw line while Kalamazoo sank 14-of-19. The Spartans held a 38-32 advantage in rebounds.

Mark Ghafari led Kalamazoo with 24 points and eight rebounds. Aaron Schoenfeldt added seven points while Adam Peters fouled out with six points. Grant Carey added five points and four rebounds.

Kalamazoo returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 13 at Defiance College.
