Men's Basketball defeats Olivet, 83-71

The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team improved to 1-1 in the MIAA with an 83-71 win over Olivet at home on Saturday.

After trailing by as many as 11 points (25-14) in the first half, Kalamazoo recovered to take a lead late in the half before going into the break down one (44-43).

Kalamazoo's Grant Carey opened the second half with a three-pointer to regain the lead, 46-44. The Hornets scored the first nine points of the second half and led by as many 14 on two occasions. Kalamazoo never led by less than eight points through the final 14 minutes.

Kalamazoo shot a season-best 52.6 percent from the field while sinking 17-of-20 free throws. After a hot start in the first half, Olivet finished the game at 38 percent overall and 6-of-8 at the line. The Hornets held a 44-29 advantage in rebounds.

Mark Ghafari led Kalamazoo with 21 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Eric Fishman added 19 points while hitting 8-of-8 free throws.

Aaron Schoenfeldt scored 15 points with seven rebounds on 6-of-7 shooting with three free throws. Grant Carey added 11 points.

Coming off the bench were Adam Peters with eight points and six rebounds and Mike Oravetz with seven points and four rebounds.

Kalamazoo is scheduled to face Calvin next at home on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
