Kalamazoo falls to the University of Chicago

KALAMAZOO, MI - The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team lost 72-53 at home to the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets are now 4-3 overall this season. Chicago was ranked 17th in the nation last week and this week fell just outside of the top 25.

The Hornets stayed pretty close with the Maroons throughout the first half of the game, even leading briefly a few different times during the first 10 minutes. With 1:55 left in the first half Mike Oravetz made a jumper that cut the Maroon's lead to five, but at halftime Kalamazoo trailed 35-26

The Hornets kept Chicago within single digits for the first nine minutes of the second half. Adam Dykema did all he could, scoring nine of his 12 points in the second half. A 9-0 run by the Maroons around the 11 minute mark of the second half put Chicago up 54-37 and pushed the game ultimately out of reach for the Hornets.

Carter Goetz was productive on the defensive end off the bench for the Hornets, recording two steals in just 14 minutes. Cam Schwartz led the team in rebounding with six, and also added seven points. Adam Peters reached double digits in scoring for the fifth game straight, but unfortunately wasn't as efficient as he normally is; only hitting three of his 12 shots. Oravetz was one of the only Hornets who shot well from the field today and scored a team high 13 points. As a whole, Kalamazoo shot just 19/55 from the floor.

The Hornets will look to rebound from this loss Tuesday, Dec. 16 at home against Defiance.
