Men's basketball falls to Knights

Jason Hugan playing basketball

KALAMAZOO, MI – The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team was defeated by Calvin College 92-63 on Wednesday night. Kalamazoo played shorthanded without its starting point guard or power forward as Carl Ghafari and Adam Peters were both inactive.

For the first nine minutes of the ball game the teams seemed to be trading baskets. The Hornets kept it close and about nine minutes into the game Calvin only led 18-17. Then, for the remaining 11 minutes of the half the Knights went on a 31-15 run to grab a commanding 49-32 lead at the half.

The Knights then jumped up by 30 points less than six minutes into the second half and Kalamazoo found itself too far behind to possibly climb back into the ball game.

Because of the limited depth in the front court due to the absence of Adam Peters, freshman Jason Hugan received extended playing time and made the most of it. He had 16 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks in 24 minutes off the bench. All three accomplishments were career highs in Hugan's young career. Keith Garber was extremely effective off the bench, scoring 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting in just 11 minutes. Adam Dykema had 12 points and four rebounds while Mike Oravetz added eleven points.

Kalamazoo's next game is Saturday, Feb. 14 on the road against Adrian.
