Cerven scores career-high 20 points in home loss

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team lost 89-67 to Albion College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play on Saturday.

Kalamazoo opened the game with a 7-2 lead in the first two minutes, but Albion used an 18-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 20-7 lead.

The hot-shooting Britons led by as many as 23 points (41-18) with 4:39 left in the first half before a 12-2 run by the Hornets made it a 13-point game (43-30) with 1:12 remaining. Albion scored the final five points of the half, however, to take a 48-30 lead into halftime.

Kalamazoo continued to battle and cut the deficit down to nine points (64-55) with 9:34 remaining, but the visiting Britons withstood the surge and held Kalamazoo to just one made field goal over the final nine minutes.

Albion shot 62.1 percent in the first half while finishing at 51.9 percent for the game, including 13-of-23 3-pointers. Kalamazoo shot 51.2 percent overall with 11-of-22 3's. The Britons sank 20-of-28 free throws while Kalamazoo made 12-of-27.

Albion held a 35-22 advantage in rebounds, including 11-4 on the offensive end.

Tommy Cerven led the offensive attack for Kalamazoo with a career-high 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

Josh Whitney scored 13 points with six rebounds and three assists. Josh Miller finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Demarco Dickerson and Charlie Carson each added seven points off the bench.

Kalamazoo returns to action at Olivet on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
