Men's Basketball Falls as #13 Calvin Pulls Away Late

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College men's basketball team continued MIAA play with a home game against #13 Calvin on Saturday (Feb. 10). The Hornets were in a battle with the nationally-ranked Knights until CU scored 27 of the final 37 points en route to an 83-63 win over K.

After Calvin took a 3-2 lead early in the game, Kalamazoo took the lead back and held it for the next 13 minutes with good defense and shot selection. The Knights secured a 26-25 lead with 4:57 remaining and went on a 10-2 run to grow the lead out to seven at the 2:33 mark. Eventually, K would head into the locker room down 38-32 at the break against the #13 team in NCAA DIII. 

Kalamazoo exchanged buckets with Calvin for the first couple of minutes of the second half, but the Knights were able to grow their lead to 11 at the 14:57 mark. The Hornets flipped a switch and went on a 14-6 run to climb back within three with 10:14 remaining. Unfortunately, CU scored 27 of the following 37 points, including a 14-3 run, to break the game open and gain the win over K. 

Kalamazoo shot 36.4% overall compared to Calvin's 50.0%. The Hornets made 8 of 32 (25.0%) 3-pointers compared to the Knights' 8 of 26 (30.8%). Kalamazoo went 7 of 12 (58.3%) from the free-throw line compared to Calvin's 19 of 25 (76.0%). The Hornets had 38 rebounds compared to the Knights' 35, while Kalamazoo had 13 assists on 24 made field goals.

Gabriel Sharp scored 16 points off the bench to lead the team. Lukas Broadsword finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while Ty Horky collected 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

Carter Bandemer (8), JJ Stevens (8), Bobby Samples (6), and Patrick Perez (3) rounded out the Hornets' scoring.

Kalamazoo will continue conference play with a road game at #2 Trine on Wednesday (Feb. 14), beginning at 7:30 p.m.
