Title: Head Coach

Eric Dougal completed his fourth year as head men’s basketball coach at Kalamazoo College in 2016.  He was named the head coach of the Hornets on August 15, 2012.

Dougal brought the Hornets an exciting up-tempo, attacking style of basketball that turned heads in his first season finishing in a tie for sixth place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Assocation (MIAA) despite only graduating two seniors from that team. During his first year at Kalamazoo College, Dougal oversaw the re-design of the gym floor in Anderson Athletic Center, designed and raised money to renovate the varsity locker rooms, and reached out to engage alumni in the program.  Dougal has also shown his ability to recruit, bringing in one of the top recruiting classes that Kalamazoo College has seen in recent years. His 2012-13 team also excelled in the classroom, earning a 3.429 team GPA. That was good enough to earn them the MIAA Team GPA Award, while seven members of the team were named to the NABC Honors Court.

Before coming to Kalamazoo College, Dougal spent six seasons as an assistant coach at two highly competitive NCAA Division III programs, Manchester College (2006-11) and UW-Platteville (2011-12).

As recruiting coordinator at Manchester, Dougal helped bring in classes that took the program to a national level as the Spartans finished the 2011-12 season ranked No. 18 in the country with a 22-7 record. Manchester was ranked No. 3 in the Midwest Region and returned to the NCAA III Tournament for the first time since 1999. In addition to his recruiting and on court responsibilities, Dougal managed the scouting reports and film breakdown as well as all aspects of the Junior Spartans Basketball Camp. He also taught activity classes, coordinated fall sports game day operations, and served as strength and conditioning coach.

Dougal spent the 2011-12 season on the staff at UW-Platteville, a program that has won four NCAA III National Championships in ten tournament appearances. At UW-Platteville, Dougal served as an assistant coach responsible for designing and implementing the strength and conditioning program, scouting of opponents, recruiting top-level student-athletes, and supervising the academic success program in addition to serving as a health and physical education instructor.

Dougal played two years of basketball and football at UW-La Crosse before an injury ended his playing career. He earned a degree in physical education with a mathematics minor in 2005, and completed a master’s degree at Ball State University’s School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science in 2011.

Dougal is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, and is a certified instructor of First Aid/CPR/AED.

Dougal resides in Kalamazoo with his wife, Kelly, and their two sons, DJ (age 3), and Brayden (1).
