Men's Soccer wins 3-0 at Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College men's soccer team achieved something it had not done since 2009; beat Calvin. The Hornets left Calvin's Zuidema Field with a 3-0 victory over the first-place team in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).

"We were outstanding in all areas of the game," Kalamazoo Head Coach Lumumba Shabazz said. "Our defense was very efficient."

Neither team scored in the first 35 minutes of play, but the Hornets broke the scoreless tie in the 40th minute. Freshman Noah Bushaw broke loose and fired a 25-yard missile beating Calvin goalkeeper Andrew Claucherty.

Kalamazoo would take its 1-0 lead into halftime, but kept up the pressure on the Knights. In the 57th minute, sophomore Nicholas Shabino beat the Calvin defense down the far sideline and shot from inside the box. The shot was saved by Claucherty, but the rebound went right to junior Werner Roennecke who buried it into the open net.
Down 2-0, Calvin began to send numbers forward. The Hornets made the Knights pay in the 87th minute. Sophomore Emerson Talanda Fisher found freshman Kyle Hernandez who scored the first and final goal of the game.

Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 19-9 in the contest, but Hornet junior goalkeeper
Beau Prey kept the Knights out of the net. The Milford native was credited with seven saves.

"Beau is just a really solid net minder," said Shabazz. "His reactions were very quick tonight and came up with the big saves when he needed to.

Shabino took three shots in the game, two of which were on target.

With the win, Kalamazoo improves to 5-4 on the season. More importantly, the Hornets are 3-2 in the MIAA and currently sitting in a tie for third place.

"This was our most complete game all season," said Shabazz. "We were locked in and ready from the beginning. This result gives us confidence we can play with anyone."

Kalamazoo returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 9, when it travels to Holland for a 7:00 p.m. game with the Hope College Flying Dutchmen.
