Guedes wins NCAA III championship in 3-meter dive

Will Guedes won the national championship in the 3-meter dive at the NCAA III Championships in Shenandoah, Texas on Saturday.

The sophomore from Brasilia, Brazil won the event with a score of 572.50, nearly 25 points higher than his nearest competitor.

Guedes was in third place in the event after the morning prelims and had finished third in the men's 1-meter competition earlier in the week. He was also named NCAA III Diver of the Year at the conclusion of the meet.

Elliot Littman finished 24th overall in the 3-meter with a score of 421.40.

Also on Saturday, Dylan Shearer finished 17th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:03.90. Jacob Lindquist finished 20th (2:04.49). The men's 400 free relay team finished 23rd with a time of 3:08.29 (Simic, Shearer, Benmark, Lindquist).

Kalamazoo College finished 20th overall with a team score of 45 points.

Guedes became the fourth Kalamazoo diver to win a national championship in men's diving.

Will Oberholzer was the first Hornet to win a diving national title, in 1983 in the men's 3-meter. Jeff Gorton won five national titles, three in 1-meter diving and two in 3-meter diving, between 1997 and 2000. Anthony Holt won the 3-meter championship in 2002 and swept both events in 2003.
