Dylan Shearer '15 is Kalamazoo College's latest recipient of a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

The NCAA awards 29 scholarships for men and women each sport season. Shearer is the 23rd Kalamazoo College student-athlete to earn this $7,500 scholarship for use in an accredited graduate program.

"I was very honored and excited to receive the scholarship," Shearer said. "It's a great feeling to see my hard work, both athletically and academically, recognized with such a prestigious scholarship from the NCAA. I am in the process of applying to medical school right now, and the scholarship will be a necessary part to helping my medical career aspirations become a reality."

Shearer is a senior biology major from Milan, Mich. who carries a 3.92 grade point average. He is a four-year All-MIAA selection, three-year CSCAA (College Swimming Coaches Association of America) Scholar All-American and two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree. Shearer is a two-time honorable mention All-American (100 breaststroke & 200 breaststroke) and was MIAA champion in the 200 breaststroke in 2013. He has also been a member of three MIAA championship relay teams.

"My experiences at K have been broad and varied-that's the beauty of the K-Plan," Shearer said. "From study abroad, to my diverse course load, to being involved as a President's Student Ambassador, I have had the opportunity to stretch my mind creatively and analytically. Swimming has helped me stay grounded and allowed me to set attainable goals, all while helping me develop my hard work ethic, patience, and leadership skills. I am definitely ready for the next step because K has given me the tools to live a dedicated and focused life of learning.

"I would like to thank all those involved with the scholarship process, and I'd also like to thank my coach, Kathy, whose dedication and love for the team has helped instill within me a drive to succeed and a passion for the process."
