Howrey, Shaker Honored as All-MIAA Performers

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -  Following the conclusion of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships at Hope this past Saturday, Matt Howrey and Sharif Shaker were each named to the 2019 All-MIAA team. 

Howrey, a sophomore from Keller, Tx., placed in the top five in three different events at the MIAA Championships. He finished third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:03.78. Howrey also finished fourth in the 1650 freestye at 16:26.74 and fifth in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.99. He was also a member of the fourth place 800 freestyle relay team. The team finished at 7:03.39 including Howrey's 1:44.2 split. 

This is the second time in Howrey's two-year career that he has been named to the All-MIAA team. He was MIAA champion in the 1650 freestyle during his freshman campaign. 

Shaker, a senior from Castro Valley, Calif., placed in the top five for Kalamazoo in five different events throughout the MIAA Championships. He was a part of Kalamazoo's 200 medley relay team that finished in third place at 1:34.30. He also joined Howrey on the fourth place 800 freestyle relay team. 

In individual events, Shaker placed fourth in the 100 backstroke at :52.15 and the 200 backstroke at 1:53.45. The senior finished fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of :51.03. 

This is also the second season on the All-MIAA team for Shaker as he was honored during his sophomore season in 2016-17 with three finishes in the top three.
