Men's Tennis falls at Haverford 5-4

Branden Metzler playing tennis

Story by Mitch Blankespoor

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team battled into the wee hours of the morning Tuesday, Mar. 25 with host Haverford College. With the match tied 4-4, Kalamazoo freshman Spencer Navarre, battling cramps, forced the sixth singles flight into a third set tiebreak. The Ortonville native earned one match point at 7-6, but dropped the next three points as Kalamazoo fell 5-4.

Similar to the previous match against Franklin and Marshall, Kalamazoo fell behind 2-1 after doubles. Senior Alan Faber and freshman Branden Metzler defeated Harrison Elbert and Matt Romei 9-8(3) at second doubles. Senior Mike Korn and junior David DeSimone fell in a tight 8-6 match at third doubles.

After Metzler won first singles, senior Peter Rothstein defeated Zack Mason 6-2, 6-1 at second singles to give Kalamazoo a 3-2. The Hornets got within a single point of victory when sophomore Robert Hudson beat Jacob Youse 7-5, 6-1 at fourth singles.

Kalamazoo, though it got close, could not get the final point to win the match. Haverford won third, fifth, and sixth singles each in three sets for the victory.

Kalamazoo dips to 4-4 on the season and will play again tomorrow, Mar. 26 at Swathmore.
