KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team opened up Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play shutting out Trine University 9-0 Saturday, March 29.
"We started a little slow in doubles, but improved throughout the day," Kalamazoo Head Coach Mark Riley said. "Branden [Metzler] had a big win today."
Freshman Branden Metzler, along with senior Alan Faber, began the match with an 8-1 victory at second doubles. The Rockford, Ill. native then defeated Caleb Knust 6-2, 6-1 at first singles. Knust, who played first singles a season ago for the Thunder, did not lost a conference match in the regular season in 2013.
Senior Peter Rothstein and sophomore Robert Hudson won 8-3 at first doubles while senior Mike Korn and junior David DeSimone won 8-4 at third doubles.
The entire singles lineup for Kalamazoo surrendered no more than three games in any match.
Kalamazoo improves to 5-5 on the season and 1-0 in the MIAA. The Hornets have a quick turnaround playing Adrian tomorrow, March 30 at the Markin Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
