Branden Metzler playing tennis

Story by Mitch Blankespoor

PLEASANT VALLEY, Wis. – The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team dipped to 9-8 on the season with an 8-1 loss to nationally-ranked No. 15 Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) Sunday April 13.

Freshman Branden Metzler won Kalamazoo's lone match point at first singles. Metzler, ranked No. 10 in the Central Region by itatennis.com, bested No. 17 Juan Luis Chu 6-4, 0-6, 7-5.

"That was a big win for Branden [Metzler]," Kalamazoo Head Coach Mark Riley said. "He fought off two match points and an injury to win 7-5 in the third."

Gustavus won all other matches in straight sets. Senior Mike Korn dropped set one 6-3 at third singles and forced set two into a tiebreak which he ultimately lost 7-1.

Junior David DeSimone fell 6-2, 7-5 at fourth singles while freshman Spencer Navarre dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision at fifth singles.

Kalamazoo comes home for its final Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) match against Alma on April 23 at 4:00 p.m.
