De Witt and Ayala claim championships at MIAA Flighted Tournament

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team concluded play in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Flighted Tournament Saturday, April 26.

Freshmen Alberto Ayala and Jacob Scott teamed up to earn a victory in the consolation semifinals of the A Doubles Flight. The Hornet team defeated Logan Bread and Gordon Rumschlag of Alma 8-6. In the consolation finals, Alaya and Scott were victorious defeating John Strikwerda and Matt Buesing of Calvin 8-4.

Freshman Eric De Witt won a three-set affair with Michael Mertz of Adrian 6-2, 6-7(5), 10-2 in the B Singles flight semifinals. De Witt then defeated David Richter of Albion 4-6, 6-2, 10-1 in the finals to claim the B Singles flight championship.

Ayala and Scott both appeared in the semifinals of the C Singles flight. Ayala dispatched is Alma College opponent, Jared Guy, winning 6-2, 6-3 to secure a berth in the finals. Scott dropped a three-set match to Camden Ludlow of Hope 3-6, 7-6(5), 11-9.

Ayala won the C Singles flight title defeating Ludlow 7-6(0), 6-4 while Scott won the third-place match 6-4, 6-4 over Guy.

Sophomore Jeremy DePree defeated Klaas Walhout of Calvin 6-4, 6-0 in the consolation quarterfinals of the B Singles flight. DePree then fell in the consolation semifinals to TJ Brogan of Hope in three sets by scores of 6-2, 4-6, 10-4.

Kalamazoo will be the top seed in the MIAA Tournament and will host No. 4 Albion in the tournament semifinals.
