Peter Fitzgerald of the Kalamazoo College men's tennis team was selected as the MIAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Monday (Feb. 6). This is the second time in his career that Fitzgerald has collected player of the week honors, with the other one coming last season.
The men's tennis team opened their season with two home matches this past week against North Central (Feb. 3) and Kenyon (Feb. 4). The Hornets dropped their first match to the Cardinals (#8 in the central region) 7-2 before also falling to the Owls (#20 nationally, #5 in the central region) 7-2.
Fitzgerald was the best Hornet on the court, compiling a 3-1 overall record. Fitzgerald went 2-0 in the #2 singles slot, including a win over Luis Plata from Kenyon, who is #19 in the central region. He defeated Daniel Estanislao from North Central 6-4, 6-1 before taking down Plata 6-4, 6-2. He and his doubles partner Gabe Vidinas went 1-1 in #1 doubles, defeating the #1 doubles team from Kenyon 8-4. They were close to going 2-0 but narrowly fell to the #1 doubles team from North Central 8-7 (7-3).
For his career, Fitzgerald is 21-8 (8-0 MIAA) in singles matches and 30-15 (12-0 MIAA) in doubles matches. The senior was selected to the All-MIAA First Team in 2022 after finishing 15-6 (7-0 MIAA) in singles and 15-10 (7-0 MIAA) in doubles. He is also a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member.
Kalamazoo will have a single home match this week, welcoming Oberlin to town on Saturday (Feb. 11).
