Softball takes two from Defiance

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College softball team swept a doubleheader with Defiance College in non-conference play on Monday. The Hornets won the opener 4-2 before winning 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh in game two.

Kalamazoo fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning of the opener before scoring four runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Defiance came back with another run in the fourth to make it 4-2, but Kalamazoo was able to hold on for the win.

Kalamazoo outhit Defiance 7-6 and took advantage of two Yellow Jacket errors.

Paige Maguire was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.

Maddy Sinkovich singled and drove in a run. Dana Page, Erin DuRoss, Emma Patrash and Rachel Epstein each had a single.

Tracy Shuryan pitched three and two-third innings in the start and allowed just two runs. Victoria Najacht finished the game and earned the win while not allowing a run.

Game two was scoreless through three and a half innings before Kalamazoo put a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Erin DuRoss singled home Querubin Dubois.

Defiance went up 2-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth and held Kalamazoo scoreless in the bottom half which led to the dramatic ending in the bottom of the seventh.

Grace Mathieu started things off with a single through the left side of the infield. Katie George pinch ran and stayed on first following a flyout to centerfield. Maddy Sinkovich came up and drove a ball over the centerfielder's head, scoring George all the way from first base. Sinkovich advanced to third on the throw home and noticed the ball skip past the catcher and raced for the plate, sliding in safely just before the throw back to the plate from the backstop.

Kalamazoo outhit Defiance seven to five while each team had one error.

Sinkovich finished 2-for-4 with the double and RBI. DuRoss was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Dubois doubled and scored while Kennedy Boulton and Mathieu each had a single.

Erin DuRoss earned the win on the mound, allowing five hits and two runs in seven innings.

Kalamazoo returns to conference play with a home doubleheader against Alma on Wednesday, April 23 at 3:30 p.m.
