Softball kicks off Florida trip Thursday

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – The Kalamazoo College softball team began its eight game stretch in Florida Thursday afternoon.

The Hornets were unable to come away with a win in the first game of the day as they fell to Heidelberg, 10-5.

Hannah Pipkin got the Hornets off on the right foot as she drove in Andrea MacMichael with an RBI double in the top of the first giving K a 1-0 lead.

But Heidelberg answered in a big way. The Student Princes scored seven in the bottom of the second and never looked back.

Kalamazoo did its best to battle back as the Hornets added two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings but Heidelberg ended K's chance at a comeback with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Offensively the Hornets were led by Pipkin and Erin DuRoss who each ended the afternoon with two hits and two RBIs.

MacMichael also recorded two hits in the game.

Transylvania came out swinging in the second game and put up eight runs in the first two innings before adding three more in the fourth. Kalamazoo had made it an 8-2 game in the top of the fourth before the Pioneers additional runs put the mercy rule in effect.

Transylvania had eight hits in the game compared to five for Kalamazoo.

Andrea MacMichael was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Nori Seita and Hayleigh Alamo each had an RBI in the game.

Kalamazoo returns to action Friday with games against UW-Whitewater and William Paterson.
