Softball Sees Two Selected to All-MIAA Teams

The Kalamazoo College softball team had two student-athletes named to an All-MIAA team on Thursday (May 11). Lucy Hart was named to the All-MIAA First Team as a first baseman, and Sam Moss earned second-team honors with her work as a shortstop and a pitcher. Hart has been selected to the first team in the last two seasons, and this is Moss' first All-MIAA team.

Kalamazoo finished the 2023 regular season with a record of 19-19 (6-10 MIAA) and finished sixth in the conference. The Hornets began the season 10-8 before heading into MIAA play and also went 3-1 against non-conference teams in the back half of the season for a 13-9 non-conference record.

Hart has been a mainstay in the Hornet lineup for the past four seasons and arguably put together her best season this year. In conference play, Hart was second in batting average at a .542 clip, just eight points behind the leader. She also finished third in hits (26), third in on-base percentage (.585), fifth in triples (2), sixth in RBI (16), sixth in slugging percentage (.729), and eighth in doubles (5). Her best game came against Saint Mary's, where she finished a perfect 4-4 with a double and three RBI. Overall, Hart finished with a slash line of .423/.482/.675, producing 52 hits, 15 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 30 RBI, 30 runs, and 13 walks in 123 at-bats. She led the team in average, hits, runs, doubles, home runs, walks, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and was second in RBI and triples. Hart also had a team-high .989 field percentage by only making three errors on 281 total chances. In addition, she broke single-season records for hits and doubles while tying the home run record. After her four years, Hart also finished with the most career hits (134), doubles (34), and RBI (77) in program history.

As the starting shortstop, three-hole hitter, and top pitcher for Kalamazoo, Moss did it all in her final season as a Hornet. In 16 MIAA games, she hit .362 with 17 hits, eight doubles, a triple, 15 RBI, 12 runs, a .404 on-base percentage, and a .574 slugging percentage. Moss also made eight appearances (seven starts), finishing with a 3.67 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 42 innings. Overall this season, she had a .383/.424/.608 slash line with 46 hits, 13 doubles, a triple, four home runs, 33 RBI, and 28 runs in 120 at-bats. In the circle, Moss made 19 appearances (18 starts) with an 11-7 record, 14 complete games, three shutouts, a 2.92 ERA, and 68 strikeouts in 115 innings. She led the team in RBI, ERA, wins, complete games, shutouts, innings pitched, and strikeouts while being tied for the team lead in home runs. In addition, Moss broke the Kalamazoo single-season records for doubles, RBI, and wins while tying the home run record.
