CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team won its fourth straight game Tuesday, Dec. 17, with a 78-73 victory over the College of Mount Saint Joseph (Ohio).
Neither team led by more than a basket in the opening minutes. With the game tied at 14, the Lions of Mount St. Joseph (MSJ) went on a 9-0 run in just over two minutes to take a 23-14 lead with 11:42 to play in the opening half.
Kalamazoo junior guard Emily Lindsay answered with two consecutive three point baskets to cut the Lion lead to just three points.
Kalamazoo features a balanced scoring attack in the victory with four Hornets scoring at least 14 points. Lindsay finished with 17 points, junior forward Perri (Weiderman) Nicholson scored 16 points while Antione and Overstreet netted 14 points apiece.
Tara Dennis led all scorers with 29 points on 11-16 shooting for the Lions.
In addition to her scoring, Nicholson hauled in 19 rebounds tying her for second all-time in rebounds in a game. She also had the assignment of guarding Dennis.
"Perry [Nicholson] did a fantastic job rebounding the basketball down the stretch," Miller said. "She was very strong for us on the glass tonight."
Kalamazoo outrebounded MSJ 51-44 in the game. The Lions made 25 field goals compared to 23 for K, but the Hornets made up for that difference and more from the free throw line. Kalamazoo converted 29-43 free throws while the Lions went 17-27 from the charity stripe.
Kalamazoo improves to 4-4 on the season. In addition, the last time the Hornets won four consecutive games was back in the 2004-05 season. Kalamazoo looks to win a fifth straight game for the first time since the 2001-02 season when K takes on Mich.-Dearborn Dec. 28. Tipoff is scheduled for noon.
