Hornets lose heartbreaker to Britons

Grace Smith playing basketball.

The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team let a win slip away Wednesday night 54-53 on the road against Albion. The women are now 9-6 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

The Hornets led for the majority of the first half behind the offense of Grace Smith and Kelsey Adamski who combined for 13 first half points and three rebounds. Perri Nicholson was cleaning up the glass in the first half and tallied seven rebounds. The Hornets played shut down defense all around and forced the Britons into shooting just 24.2 percent. Kalamazoo went into the locker room at halftime leading Albion 27-18.

The second half was a completely different story. The Hornets were outshot, outscored, and outrebounded by the Britons. Their 24.2 percent shooting jumped up to 47.8 while Kalamazoo shot just 9-of-31 in the second half.

The Britons came back and took the lead a little over eight minutes into the second half and from there on it was a very close game that saw an Albion player break a 50-50 tie with a three pointer with 30 seconds left on the clock. That would go on to be the game winner as Kalamazoo would miss in its rebuttal attempt.

Emily Kozal was a huge bright spot for the Hornets again and scored ten points and nabbed two steals. She's now scored 26 over her last two contests off of the bench. Perri Nicholson had a double-double with 10 and 11 and Grace Smith finished with 11 points and three boards.

This is only the second time this season the women have lost back-to-back games and their next chance to end their current skid will come Wednesday, Jan. 21 at home against Calvin.
