Kozal scores 21 in loss to No. 11 Calvin

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team lost 81-65 to No. 11 Calvin College in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener Wednesday in the Anderson Athletic Center.

Kalamazoo led by as many as seven points in the first period before Calvin closed out the period with an 11-2 run to take a 19-17 lead after 10 minutes. 

Kalamazoo remained within a point (23-22) early in the second period, but the visiting Knights slowly extended the lead to 10 points (43-33) by halftime.

Kalamazoo used a 13-3 run over the first four and a half minutes of the third period to even the score at 46-46. Calvin regained the lead, however, and led 55-50 after three.

The Hornets remained within four points (60-56) with 6:07 remaining before Calvin put the game out of reach with a 17-3 run over the next three minutes.

Kalamazoo shot a season-best 49.1 percent from the field while Calvin shot 48.6 percent. The Knights held a 37-30 advantage in rebounds, including 17-10 on the offensive end.

Emily Kozal scored a career-high 21 points to go with five rebounds to lead Kalamazoo.

Grace Smith scored 17 points with five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Kelsey Adamski finished with 10 points, five assists and two steals.

Danielle Simon added eight points, four assists and four steals in 26 minutes off the bench. Claire Slaughter led the team with six rebounds to go with two points, four assists and three steals.

Kalamazoo returns to action this Saturday, Dec. 5 at Albion.
