OBERLIN, Ohio – After ending 2015 on a high note with a home win over Grove City, the Kalamazoo College women's basketball team was unable to carry its momentum into the New Year as the Hornets fell on the road to the hosting Oberlin College Yeowomen Saturday afternoon.

The Yeowomen defeated the Hornets, 76-47.

Oberlin jumped out to a seven point lead in the first quarter of play at the 3:03 mark after the teams battled back and forth, but Kalamazoo tightened up its defense down the stretch of the first period going on a 6-2 run.

With Kalamazoo down just three, Oberlin began the second quarter on a 10-1 run. The Yeowomen held Kalamazoo to only four points in the second quarter.

The third quarter of play was more of the same for Oberlin as the Yeowomen extended their lead to 29 by the end of the period and put the game out of reach for the Hornets.

Kalamazoo never quit down the stretch, though, tying Oberlin 14-14 in the final quarter.

Ultimately, the Yeowomen's hot shooting from the field (62 percent) was too much for the Hornets to handle.

The Hornets were outrebounded 41-21.

Grace Smith produced another strong effort for Kalamazoo scoring 17 points. Smith has scored double figures in all but two games this season for the Hornets.

Kelsey Adamski also scored in double figures recording 13 points.

Kalamazoo's defense caused Oberlin to turn the ball over 20 times.

The Hornets will return to MIAA action on Wednesday, January 6 when they travel to Adrian College.
