Smith scores career-high 27 in loss to Albion

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team fell 74-68 to Albion College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play on Wednesday.

Albion scored the first basket of the game, but Kalamazoo led by as many as eight points much of the first period. Albion scored the first six points of the second period to take a 19-18 lead, but Kalamazoo regained the lead and led by as many as eight before taking a 37-30 lead into halftime.

The Britons struck early again in the third period, scoring the first eight points to take a 38-37 lead. Kalamazoo regained the lead again (47-46) with 2:49 remaining, but Albion used an 8-2 run to lead 54-49 entering the final period.

Kalamazoo made it a one point game (54-53) a minute into the fourth, but a 14-4 run by the Britons put Albion up 11 with 1:46 left in regulation. Albion still led by 11 with 1:01 left, but a a 3-pointer by Danielle Simon and a pair of 3's by Grace Smith made it a four point game (72-68) with 17 seconds left, but Albion clinched the win with two free throws as time ran out on the Hornets.

Albion shot 40.9 percent overall while making 16-of-26 at the free throw line. Kalamazoo shot 38.6 percent from the field and sank 5-of-6 free throws.

Albion outrebounded Kalamazoo 52-37, including 18-10 offensively resulting in a 21-11 advantage in second chance points.

Grace Smith led Kalamazoo with a career-high 27 points while recording her fifth double-double of the season with 13 rebounds.

Emily Kozal scored 16 points while Danielle Simon finished with 11 points, five rebounds and five assists. Kelsey Adamski led the team with eight assists.

Kalamazoo plays the second of four straight home games this Saturday, Jan. 30 when the Hornets host Trine at 3 p.m.
