Trine drops women's basketball

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team competed in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action Saturday afternoon as the Trine University Thunder visited Anderson Athletic Center.

Trine defeated Kalamazoo, 78-42.

A 15-2 run to begin the game and first quarter set the pace for Trine in a game with two teams battling to make the conference tournament.

The Thunder led 19-6 at the end of the first.

Turnovers played a big role in the first half of play as Kalamazoo committed 14 while Trine committed just two. Kalamazoo trailed 45-19 at the break.

Despite trailing for the game in its entirety, the Hornets never quit and received large amounts of energy from Claire Slaughter who ended the game with 10 rebounds, seven of which were offensive.

Providing a spark off the bench for Kalamazoo was Amanda Moss who provided 18 minutes and made her presence felt on the defensive end. She ended with four points.

Offensively the Hornets were paced by Grace Smith who ended the afternoon with 12 points to go along with seven rebounds.

Emily Kozal also scored in double figures with 11 points.

The Hornets were held to 25 percent shooting while the Thunder shot 44.6.

Trine's Brandi Dawson scored a game-high 17 points and scored 11 of her team's first 13 points in the game.

Kalamazoo will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Feb. 3 when the Hornets host Olivet at 6 p.m.
