Kalamazoo College's Grace Smith was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Six women's basketball first team on Feb. 11 by the NCAA and the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Smith is one of just two student-athletes from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association to achieve the distinguished honor that recognizes women's basketball players from the states of Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

With her selection to the first team, Smith advances to the national ballot and is eligible to be named an Academic All-American later this academic year.

A junior from Portage, Mich., Smith possesses a nearly perfect 3.99 grade point average and is majoring in biology.

As a member of the women's basketball team, Smith averages 13.6 points per game to go along with a team-leading 7.3 rebounds per game. She's started all 23 games for the Hornets this season and plays a team-high 34.9 minutes per game.

Her five double-doubles this season also lead the team.

Also a member of the women's soccer team and the starting goalkeeper this past season, Smith has been named to the MIAA's Academic Honor Roll in each of the past two academic years.

To be eligible for a Capital One Academic All-American nomination, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and a starter or important reserve with a least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average.
