Emily Kozal playing basketball.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team fell just short of upsetting Calvin on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, losing by a score of 67-59.

Calvin led 15-12 after the opening 10 minutes of play, but Kalamazoo battled back in the second quarter to take a four point lead with six minutes remaining. The Knights, however, closed the half on 12-3 run to take a 36-31 advantage into halftime.

Calvin picked up right where they left off, beginning the third quarter with a 12-1 run to balloon their lead to 16 points. The Hornets stormed back with a 14-0 run of their own with Emily Kozal leading the way with nine points during that stretch.

Calvin led 51-46 heading into the fourth quarter, but K quickly pulled within on as the teams traded baskets throughout the period. The Hornets finally took the lead with just over three minutes remaining in the game. Calvin quickly reclaimed the lead and found themselves ahead 62-59 after a pair of Bre Luurtsema free throws with 1:20 remaining. Unable to score in the final minute, Kalamazoo was forced to foul and the Knights closed out the game at the free throw line.

Emily Kozal led three Hornets in double figures with a game-high 22 points. Isabelle Clark had 17 points and Danielle Simon had 16 points to go along with 4 assists. Mya Gough broke the record she set just over one week ago for blocks in a game with seven while also pulling down 13 rebounds.

All five Calvin starters scored in double figures led by Ali Spayde who finished with 16 points.

K will play its final home game on Wednesday, Feb. 14th at 7:30 p.m. against Albion.
