Women's Basketball Falls in Overtime

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team lost 68-58 in overtime to Finlandia University in non-conference play Wednesday.

Kalamazoo got out to an early 10-2 lead and led by as many as nine (14-5) in the first quarter before the visiting Lions used a 7-0 run to end the quarter down 14-12.

The Hornets were up 17-12 in the second quarter before Finlandia tied the score at 22-22 and went on a 10-0 run to close out the half up 32-22.

Kalamazoo outscored Finlandia 20-9 in the third quarter to take a 42-41 lead heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was back-and-forth with Finlandia leading by five (51-46) with 2:39 remaining. The Hornets trailed 53-51 when Sierra Fraser scored with three seconds left to even the score. Finlandia missed a shot at the buzzer sending the game to overtime.

Finlandia pulled away early in overtime and never relinquished the lead. Kalamazoo was within five with 35 seconds left, but the Hornets were forced to foul and the Lions made their free throws to secure the win.

Kalamazoo shot 27.7 percent overall while hitting 10-of-32 3-pointers (31.3%). Finlandia shot 34.3 percent overall, but made just 1-of-19 3's (5.3%). The Lions sank 19-of-24 free throws compared to 2-of-4 for the Hornets. Kalamazoo held a 55-52 edge in rebounds, including 22-13 on the offensive end.

Sierra Fraser recorded a double-double with 12 points and 22 rebounds to go with two assists and three blocked shots. Her 22 rebounds tied the school record for rebounds in a game (Nyemade Cooper, 2007).

Kaytlyn Tidey led the Hornets in scoring with 16 points and six assists with three steals. Darby Scott scored 12 points with three assists while Georgie Andrews added 11 points with seven rebounds, two assists, and three steals.  Eliza McCall finished with seven points and seven rebounds.

Kalamazoo returns to MIAA play at Alma on Saturday, Jan. 26.
