KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team lost its season opener 73-52 to Mount Union in the opening round of the Teammates for Life Tip-off Tournament.
Mount Union jumped out to an early lead (22-4) and led 25-11 at the end of the first quarter. Mount Union outscored Kalamazoo 11-10 in the second to take a 36-21 lead into halftime.
Mount Union outscored Kalamazoo 27-13 in the third to go up 63-34. Kalamazoo outscored Mount Union 18-10 in the fourth, leading to the 73-52 final.
Kalamazoo shot 30.6 percent overall compared to 30.2 percent by Mount Union. The visitors outrebounded Kalamazoo 57-41, including 28-6 on the offensive end, leading to 19 second-chance points.
Jackie Brines led the Hornets with 17 points and seven rebounds.
Sara English finished with 12 points. Ruby Hogan added 10 points with four rebounds off the bench while making 6-of-6 free throws.
Jordan Wesaw finished with seven points. Kaelyn Arlington scored five points with a game-high 16 rebounds.
Kalamazoo plays Manchester in the consolation game Sunday at 1 p.m. The Spartans were defeated 67-52 Saturday by Westminster (Pa.).
