Women's Basketball Falls to Manchester

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team was defeated 70-68 by Manchester University in the consolation game of the Teammates For Life Tip-off Tournament Sunday afternoon.

Manchester led 21-16 after the first quarter, but Kalamazoo's 25-11 advantage in the second gave the Hornets a 41-32 halftime lead.

Manchester came out in the third and outscored Kalamazoo 22-7 to take a 54-48 lead heading to the fourth. Manchester led by as many as eight before Kalamazoo cut the deficit to one (64-63) with 2:15 remaining. The Spartans led by six with 1:19 left before a pair of layups by Jordan Wesaw made it a 70-68 game with 34 seconds left. Manchester missed four free throws, but the Hornets could not capitalize as the game ended in Manchester's favor, 70-68.

Kalamazoo shot 47.9 percent overall compared to 43.3 percent by Manchester. The Hornets sank 17-of-28 free throws. Manchester made 11-of-20. Kalamazoo outrebounded Manchester 40-27 overall. Manchester scored 27 points off turnovers compared to 18 by Kalamazoo.

Sara English led the Hornets with 20 points while making 4-of-6 three-pointers. English was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Jordan Wesaw scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting with five rebounds. Ruby Hogan scored 13 points with four rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Jackie Brines added seven points with eight rebounds.

Kalamazoo returns to action next Saturday, Nov. 18, when the Hornets travel to Anderson University for a 1 p.m. game.
