Women's Lacrosse defeats Defiance 13-9

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's lacrosse team defeated Defiance College 13-9 in non-conference play on Monday at MacKenzie Field.

The two teams exchanged leads throughout the first half without either team ever leading by more than one goal. Kalamazoo held the 6-5 advantage at halftime.

Defiance regained the lead early in the second half and led 8-7 with 25:08 remaining. As snow began to fall heavily and the wind picked up, Kalamazoo's offense also picked up as the Hornets scored the next five goals to take a 12-8 lead with 9:34 remaining. Defiance made it 12-9, but the Hornets scored again to make it 13-9 and held the Yellow Jackets scoreless over the final eight minutes for the win.

Kalamazoo outshot Defiance 33-19 overall, including 24-15 on goal. The Hornets held a slight edge in ground balls (19-18) while the Yellow Jackets held a 16-10 lead in ground balls. Kalamazoo had 12-of-17 successful clears compared to 7-of-17 for Defiance.

Anika Sproull led Kalamazoo with six goals on nine shots with three draw controls and two ground balls.

Nicole Huff scored twice on two attempts with three draw controls. Alivia DuQuet also scored twice with three ground balls. Vethania Stavropoulos led the Hornets with five ground balls.

Ivy McKee made six saves in goal for the Hornets.

Kalamazoo (4-6) returns to conference play with a game at Trine on Wednesday, April 16 at 4 p.m.
