Women's Lacrosse Falls to Alma in Overtime

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's lacrosse team lost its home finale 10-9 to Alma College in overtime Tuesday night at MacKenzie Field.

Kalamazoo opened the scoring just under two minutes into the game and led 2-0 a minute later. Alma got on the board with 10:23 left in the first and neither team scored the rest of the quarter.

Alma scored three goals in the first four minutes of the second quarter to take a 4-2 lead. Kalamazoo scored with 14 seconds left in the quarter to make it a 4-3 game going into halftime.

Kalamazoo tied it up with a goal 49 seconds into the third quarter. Alma regained the lead with 10:33 left before Kalamazoo scored three unanswered to lead 7-5 with 5:04 left in the third. Alma scored with 1:08 left making it 7-6 at the end of three.

The Scots tied it early in the fourth before a pair of Hornet goals made it 9-7 with 3:28 remaining in regulation. Alma scored with 1:37 left and with just 20 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

Kalamazoo won the draw and had a shot go high a minute into overtime. The Scots proceeded to take a turnover the length of the field for a quick goal to end the game.

Alma outshot Kalamazoo 31-26 overall, while Kalamazoo had a 17-16 edge in shots on goal. Kalamazoo won 12 of the 23 draws, but turned the ball over two more times than Alma.

Ella Spooner led the Hornets with five goals, three ground balls and three draw controls.

Hannah Heeren scored a goal with two assists, six ground balls, four draw controls and four caused turnovers.

Sophie Hartl and Abbie Caza each had a goal and an assist. Natalie Maki also scored.

Emma Curcuru led the team with seven ground balls. Hartl had a team-high five draw controls. Emma Curcuru shared the team-lead with four caused turnovers.

Kalamazoo finishes the 2023 season Saturday afternoon at Hope.
