KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's lacrosse team fell 17-6 to Hope on Saturday (Apr. 13) at MacKenzie Field. Before the game, the Hornets honored Hannah Heeren on senior day, as well as Emma Curcuru, who had played the previous three seasons and is now in an assistant coaching role.
It looked like a high-scoring affair, as both teams scored the first five goals in the first three and a half minutes of play. Then, the defenses settled in, and Kalamazoo led 4-3 at the end of the first quarter. However, it was all Hope for the remainder of the game, scoring all four goals in the second quarter to lead 7-4 at halftime.
The Hornets' drought did not stop there as the Flying Dutch also scored five of the six goals in the third quarter. Unfortunately, it was the same story in the final quarter, with Hope scoring five goals to Kalamazoo's one.
Hope outshot Kalamazoo 37-16 overall, 26-15 on goal. Kalamazoo won 12 of the 26 draw controls.
Hannah Heeren had three goals, an assist, nine draw controls, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers on her senior day. Ella Spooner also scored three goals with two draw controls and a caused turnover.
Jordan Doyle collected the other two assists. Julia Kozal led the team with five ground balls and also caused two turnovers.
Jordan Flink was credited with nine saves in goal and had two ground balls.
Kalamazoo will host again on Tuesday, Apr. 16, as Albion College comes to town at 7 p.m.
