Women's Lacrosse Completes Comeback Win in Overtime Against Trine

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's lacrosse team defeated Trine University 14-13 in overtime on Wednesday night.

Kalamazoo scored the first goal 30 seconds into the game, but then Trine scored four straight goals in the first quarter to lead 4-1.

The Hornets turned the momentum around in the second quarter, scoring four straight of their own to take a 5-4 lead at 7:54. The Thunder tied the game up with 1:20 remaining in the half, but Kalamazoo regained the lead with 42 seconds left for the 6-5 halftime lead.

Trine turned the momentum back in its favor by scoring six of the first seven goals in the third quarter for the biggest lead of the ballgame at 11-7. The Hornets scored with eight seconds remaining as the tide began to switch again heading into the fourth quarter.

Kalamazoo put away back-to-back goals to get within one at the 9:20 mark before the Thunder got one of them back. Then, the Hornets rattled off three straight goals to take a 13-12 lead with 1:28 on the clock. However, Trine pulled its goalie for an extra attacker, and it paid off by scoring with 40 seconds left and forcing overtime. 

After Kalamazoo gained the draw control to open overtime, Tessa Fuller found Hannah Heeren cutting for the game-winner. 

Trine outshot Kalamazoo 32-31 overall, and both teams had 25 shots on goal. The Hornets won 21 of the 30 draw controls and made 12 saves to Trine's 11.

Hannah Heeren scored all five of her goals in the second half and added an assist, 12 draw controls, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers.

Tessa Fuller scored three goals and collected two assists. Sophie Hartl scored twice with six draw controls and a ground ball. Ella Spooner added two goals, an assist, two draw controls, and a caused turnover. 

Jordan Doyle had a goal and two assists. Natalie Maki had a goal, an assist, two ground balls, and a caused turnover. Julia Kozal collected three ground balls and a caused turnover.

Jordan Flink made 12 saves and collected four ground balls.

Kalamazoo finishes the regular season with a road game at Adrian on Saturday, April 27, at 1 p.m.
