KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Playing its third game in the last six days, the Kalamazoo College women's soccer team showed no signs of fatigue Thursday evening as the Hornets picked up a hard fought overtime win over the reigning Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champions of Calvin.

After heading to extra time all square at 1-1, Madison Moote drew a foul inside the penalty area setting up Katie Sorensen's game-winning penalty kick, notably her second goal in as many games, which ultimate secured a 2-1 win and three points for K.

"Madeleine Chilcote and Madison Moote had great work rates in OT and Moote did a great job getting in the goal area and drawing the foul," Kalamazoo head coach Bryan Goyings said. "Katie showed great composure finishing the penalty. It was an excellent result against one of the perennial top teams in the conference."

Before reaching overtime, Calvin broke the 0-0 deadlock when Carly Veenstra followed up a rebound and secured the lead for the Knights in the 72nd minute.

But the Hornets remained composed. Just two minutes later, Kalamazoo earned a free kick right outside the box on the left flank setting up the equalizing goal. Sarah George drove a ball into the mixer which took a deflection and ended up in the back of the net.

"I was pleased with how we responded after giving up the first goal," Goyings said. "Although I felt we controlled a lot of the game, the opponent made it extremely hard to create quality chances. Recovery will be paramount as another tough league foe in Alma awaits on Saturday."

K carried the play throughout and held a 15-7 advantage in shots.

The group defended well as a unit, forcing Grace Smith to make just one save.

Kalamazoo improves to 3-0-1 in the MIAA and will travel to Alma on Saturday, Sept. 17 for a noon kickoff.
